Chronic Tension Headache
Most people get headaches from time to time. But if you have chronic tension headache, you have a headache most days.

Chronic is a word doctors use to describe any medical condition that people live with for a long time. It doesn’t mean that a condition is severe. In fact, tension headaches are usually fairly mild. They’re a problem only because they happen so often.

What is chronic tension headache?
Tension headaches happen when you’re feeling stressed, tired or angry. Many Health Practitioners think the pain is caused by tension in the muscles of your neck or your head. Poor posture regularly occurs when you hold yourself in poor alignment for long periods of time. Since most of us work at a desk or stand over clients or our work-spaces, we spend most of our waking hours in poor alignment.

If you have chronic tension headache, you get these headaches a lot. Doctors say you have chronic tension headache if you get tension headaches more than 15 days a month for at least three months. For some people, the pain never goes away completely. Tension headaches are different from migraines. Migraine headaches can make you sensitive to light or noise, and make you feel sick or dizzy.

What are the symptoms?
A tension headache usually feels like an ordinary headache. Some people say it’s as if a band is pressing on both sides of their head. Tension headaches don’t tend to get worse if you move around. So doing something like climbing stairs shouldn’t make you feel any worse.

What treatments work?
Things you can try yourself
People who regularly take gentle exercise are less likely to get tension headaches than people who don’t. You could try walking, swimming, jogging or cycling.

You could also keep a diary of your headaches. This can help you spot the things that trigger your headaches, so you can avoid them. Being hungry, using a computer screen or being hunched over a desk can trigger a headache for some people, mostly due to poor posture.

Treatments
Many people take painkillers to help with the occasional tension headache. That’s your choice, but people with chronic tension headache get headaches 15 days a month or more. I would question taking painkillers this often. Taking
painkillers more than two or three times a week can actually cause more headaches.

Massage Therapy is used regularly to reduce tension headaches from the root of the problem and not just to decrease the signs and symptoms that day. Decreasing the tension in ones neck can be dramatically changed in one session. However, it is the follow up and regular visits the keep them from returning.

What will happen to me?
Tension headaches are usually fairly mild. But if they happen a lot, they may interfere with your work or your social life. Getting treatment can help.

SET UP YOUR APPOINTMENT TODAY!!!

This information however does not replace medical advice.
If you have a medical problem please see your doctor.

Do you know the physical effects of massage?

Pumping – The stroking movements in massage suck fluid through blood vessels and lymph vessels. By increasing the pressure in front of the stroke, a vacuum is created behind. This is especially important in tight or damaged muscle tissue as a tight muscle will squeeze blood out like a sponge, depriving the tissues of vital nutrients and energy to repair.

Increased tissue permeability – Deep massage causes the pores in tissue membranes to open, enabling fluids and nutrients to pass through. This helps remove waste products such as lactic acid and encourage the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients which help them recover quicker.

Stretching – Massage can stretch tissues that could not be stretched in the usual methods. Bundles of muscle fibres are stretched lengthwise as well as sideways. Massage can also stretch the sheath or fascia that surrounds the muscle, so releasing any tension or pressure build up.

Break down scar tissue – Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries or trauma and can effect muscle, tendons and ligaments. This can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.

Improve tissue elasticity – Hard training can make tissues hard and inelastic. This is one reason why hard training may not result in improvements. Massage helps reverse this by stretching the tissues.

Opens micro-circulation – Massage does increase blood flow to tissues, but so does exercise. What massage also does is open or dilate the blood vessels and by stretching them this enables nutrients to pass through more easily.

Wow, book your massage today!

What a great year we’ve had sharing the space in the Moksha Yoga Ottawa studio. The staff and participants were all so welcoming – it made it very easy to become a part of your “hot” community. Thank you so much for the experience.

In order to continue to meet the demands of our growing clientele, our new clinic is located in a two-storey commercial building at 1673 Carling Ave, upstairs in Suite 202. It’s located between Churchill and Clyde, across from the Canadian Tire. FREE parking is at the rear of the building with access off Carling Ave W.

From 417 Westbound: exit 417 at Carling/Kirkwood. Travel west past Kirkwood, past Churchill, past Hakim Optical and the large private parking lot. You will turn right into the lane between the large parking lot and the brown brick building at 1673 Carling Ave. There is ample FREE parking in the rear of the building. Enter the door that reads 1673 Carling at the rear of the building and make your way upstairs to suite 202.

From 417 Eastbound: exit 417 at Carling/Kirkwood. Turn left at the first set of lights onto Kirkwood Ave. Turn left at the first set of lights onto Carling Ave. Travel west past Churchill and follow the same directions described above.

Bus Routes: #85, #150 & #187

IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER
We will be providing Therapeutic Ultrasound and Electrotherapy (IFC/TENS) at the new location. These therapies will assist in relieving pain, reducing edema/swelling, improving circulation, decreasing muscle spasm and increasing tissue healing and repair. Using these types of therapies in conjunction with massage can help you heal faster, and have you up and moving better then ever!

Now is the time to check with your insurance provider to see if you have any coverage remaining for massage therapy. Receipts are provided for all services.

Gift Certificates are also available for all treatment options, including sports, therapeutic, relaxation and pre-natal massage.

Payment Options remain cash and cheque only. This helps keep our fees low.

Yours in Health and Wellness,

You know what I’m talking about. You spend 8 hours a day sitting at your computer and by the middle of the day you start having upper back/neck pain. This is usually due to the prolonged sitting in the same position. Naturally your shoulders start to round and your head juts forward putting strain on your upper/lower back and shortening all your neck muscles. Sitting with this posture daily can lead to chronic pain in the neck and upper back and creates many postural imbalances throughout the muscles surrounding your spine.

Massage will help decrease the pain that you are currently having and will also lengthen all the affected muscles to their original length. Once we have re-balanced all the muscles, the pain should subside.

Other chronic issues that tend to arise from office work and can be alleviated by massage therapy are: tension headaches, tight and painful hamstrings, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome and many more.

If you suffer from any of these conditions or others, I can help. You don’t have to live with pain, please contact Gavin today.

With less then a week until Ottawa race weekend, it’s time to book your Post-Race massage.

After intense training and racing, athletes may find themselves with tight or injured muscles, tendons and ligaments. Left untreated, this can lead to chronic injuries in the hip, knee and foot such as IT Band Syndrome, Patellar Tendonitis or Plantar Fasciitis.

Besides treating these common injuries, post-race massage helps to flush out toxins, such as lactic acid. This will help decrease your muscle soreness/stiffness after your race so that you can get out running sooner.

Good luck to everyone and I’ll see you on the course.

One of the toughest things my clients encounter when making a change to their lifestyle is gaining support from their family and friends. The people in our lives become accustomed to our regular patterns of behaviour and we underestimate how their beliefs about our life can impact our ability to make change.

Think about the last time you tried to do something new in your life – maybe it was starting to exercise more regularly, or trying to eat healthier, or maybe you decided not to go out for a “puff” with your colleagues at break time. Do you remember what people said to you when first told them what you were doing? Did it sound something like “why?” or “what for?” or “oh sure, good luck with that”?

Why do you think people respond like this? Surely our loved ones don’t wish us to live unhealthy lifestyles. It seems impossible to imagine that the people we love would not give us the same support in reaching our goals as we would give to them. No, it’s not very likely at all.

It’s more likely they simply do not understand our motivation for change nor do they appreciate how valuable a resource they can be for you. As I said earlier, we also underestimate their impact on our success. Remember that many of us are overly cautious when it comes to change. We can imagine the dialogue in our partners’ head going something like “well if she stops eating out as much, then I have to stop eating out as much too”. Our changes have an impact on other people, and it’s likely this is the road block that your partner is feeling.

In order to be successful we need to understand our own motivation for change, and to communicate this to the important people in our lives, so that they understand the impact on you, and your expectations of them.

Try this “Action Plan for Gaining Your Family’s Support“, taken from my No More Excuses Workshop, next time you need to get the team on board with your lifestyle change. Work through the activity and share it with the people you value most in your quest for change.

November 1st has come and gone and we are up and going. Over the last week Michelle and I have been getting all the finishing touches taken care of. We must have been in and out of the clinic 20 times over the last few days. Now all the hard work has paid off and the space looks amazing. Check out the before and after pictures.

The highlight of the past weekend was when Michelle dropped a box of books on the floor at the same time that the yoga class was in their final meditation. Oops…good thing the walls are soundproof.

We are so excited to have this opportunity and would like to thank everyone at “Moksha Yoga Ottawa”:http://www.mokshayogaottawa.com/index.htm for being so welcoming. We know that this is going to be a successful friendship.

Even with all of the chaos over the weekend, Michelle was able to take a Hot YIN class on Sunday. She said pigeon pose is even more intense with sweat dripping down your face. I’ll be taking my first Moksha class tomorrow at lunch time. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Feel free to stop by to check things out. Can’t wait to see you!
